For if there is more tragic a fool than a businessman who doesn’t know that he’s an exponent of man’s highest creative spirit - it’s the artist who thinks that the businessman is his enemy.
I think people try to imitate what they like and what moves them. The strong artist will imitate but do it wrong and that wrongness is their originality.
The man hath no music in himself,
Nor is not mov’d with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons , stratagems, and spoils;
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus:
Let no such man be trusted. Mark the Music.
I don’t have any message, except don’t forget you’re alive. Because sometimes when you walk around the city or when you yourself are in a bad mood, you can think ‘Hey wait a minute! We’re alive, you know?’ We don’t know what the next second will bring.
I’ve always kept that going, finding strange records and trying to learn from them - so as not to keep it narrow because if you keep it very narrow it’s going to kill the life of the music.
